Chapter 11
âYou donât really believe Cleo killed her ex, do you, Win?â I asked a couple of hours after theyâd taken her away.
He scowled. âI most certainly do not, but Iâd give an ungodly amount of money to see the evidence they have to prove she was at the scene of the crime. Starsky said, and I repeat, âwe have you on camera, leaving the scene of the crime,â Win repeated, in probably one of the worst New York accents Iâd ever heard.
Wrinkling my nose, I laughed at him. âYikes. That was horrible.â
âMy accent or the evidence?â
âBoth.â Sighing, I grabbed the broom again and continued to sweep. âSo do you think Starsky was just blowing hot air, or do you think he really has her on camera? Because I think we both know he can be a real jerkface and make things up if they support his case. I know that firsthand.â
Iâd been through an interrogation with Detective Moore and he was all bother and bluff, but if you were easily intimidated, I could see being afraid of him, and I hated the idea Cleo was in some dark room, cowering while he screamed at her. Knowing Luis was on his way made everything better.
âI would certainly hope he wasnât bluffing to try and get her to admit something before questioning her thoroughly. Isnât that entrapment of some kind? Or is it leading the witness? I find the American court systems so confusing.â
Shrugging, I replied with only a little sarcasm, âI donât know. Ask your tattletale friend Dana. Heâs well-versed in the law. I know because he throws it in my face every chance he gets.â
Winâs handsome face fell. âNow, Dove. I wonât have this come between us. If youâd like, Iâll wrestle Dana to the ground, put him in a choke hold and bloody refuse to let go until he agrees to believe we, as a team, see and hear ghosts.â
The mental imagery made me laugh out loud, but I shook my head and sighed. âI donât want that.â
âThen what do you want, beloved? Iâm always on your side and your side aloneâno matter the circumstance. If it troubles you that Dana isnât all the way there, I wonât see him until he is.â
My heart shifted in my chest, but that wasnât at all what I wanted, either. âNo. Heâs your friend, and he should remain so if youâre not upset by him essentially calling you a liar. As an ex-spy, I guess youâre used to waiting around for a solution. Your patience is much more bountiful than mine. I, on the other hand, need space. But I would never tell you that you canât remain friends with someone you care so much about. Thatâs not how we work.â
âThank the bloody stars,â Win joked, wiping his hand across his brow in a comical gesture. âI was worried Iâd have to give up his artichoke dip on NFL Sundays. You know how much I cherish that dip, Dove.â
I had to agree, it was pretty stinkinâ good.
